Three Zuni youth - Aaliyah Lahi, Alexis Delena and Kayla Lesarlley (pictured above left to right) - attended the White House Tribal Youth Gathering in Washington DC from July 7 - 11, 2015. We are so proud of these three young women.
Here are some of their thoughts on the recent trip to Washington:
The trip was phenomenal. There were new things to do, new people we met and also the new food we ate. I really appreciate the White House and other people who gathered different tribes from different places. It was a very unique way of learning and understanding about different tribes. I learned a lot not just from the gathering itself but the places we visited and who we met and the people I traveled with. It was a blessing going to Washington D.C. and learning about different perspectives.
The trip meant a lot to me because I was representing Zuni and all Indigenous people; showing what we are all about and that we are growing stronger, especially our generation. We know education is the key and we are doing the best we can to be well-educated. No government will do Indigenous people wrong again.
What I got out of the gathering was that we have one awesome President who has our back and encouraged all native youth to do better. He is also creating many opportunities for us youth as well. What other President has done this much for Native people? It's all up to us to make connections and go after the opportunities so that we have our own story to tell. I enjoyed meeting all the other important people who told us their own stories on how they got into their position today. Ultimately, it's up to us!
