Ho’n A:wikya – Reconnecting to our Ancestral Lands

In early March, a group of young Zuni leaders and their cultural advisors set out on a journey to the origin place of the A:shiwi (Zuni people): the Grand Canyon. This group of youth ranged from high school seniors to college seniors, each with passionate aspirations to serve their community.

Cultural advisors hosted educational sessions leading up to the trip so that the youth were familiar with the cultural significance of the Grand Canyon. The group spent four days and four nights hiking 17 miles of steep trails, taking in the blessings of the rainy weather, and reconnecting to the place their ancestors emerged.

Many of the participants described the experience as something that they needed for their physical, mental, and spiritual health.
